Zirconia is a high-strength ceramic (zirconium dioxide, ZrO₂) that has revolutionized restorative dentistry over the past decade. Unlike older porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns, zirconia crowns are 100% ceramic — meaning no dark metal margin lines, no allergic reactions to base metals, and no compromise on appearance. At WeCare Dental Clinic in Antalya, we offer two zirconia options chosen based on tooth position and aesthetic priority.

Two Types of Zirconia Crowns

Monolithic zirconia (Prettau, Lava Plus)

  • 100% solid zirconia, no porcelain layering
  • Flexural strength: 1,200+ MPa (3x stronger than porcelain)
  • Best for: back molars, bruxers (grinders), heavy bite force
  • Aesthetic: slightly more opaque than e.max, but excellent for posterior teeth
  • Lifetime: 15-20+ years
  • Layered zirconia

  • Zirconia core with hand-applied porcelain layering on the visible surface
  • Combines zirconia strength with porcelain translucency
  • Best for: front teeth, smile zone, anterior aesthetics
  • Aesthetic: lifelike translucency, matches natural enamel
  • Lifetime: 12-15 years
  • We use DDcubes Prettau Anterior (Italy) for layered zirconia and 3M Lava Plus (USA) for monolithic — both premium European/American brands with manufacturer batch certificates.

Why Choose Zirconia Over Other Crown Materials?

For 90% of cases, zirconia is the right choice — it combines strength, aesthetics, and durability without the metal-line problem of PFM or the fragility of pure porcelain.

What is Included in the Zirconia Crown Package?

  • All zirconia crowns (monolithic or layered, your choice)
  • Tooth preparation, root canal if needed
  • Digital impression (intraoral scanner, no goopy molds)
  • All bonding, polishing, occlusion adjustment
  • 5 nights in a 4-star Antalya hotel (private room, breakfast included)
  • All airport transfers (AYT ↔ hotel ↔ clinic)
  • English/German/Russian/Arabic-speaking patient coordinator
  • 5-year warranty on crowns
  • The 5-Day Treatment Process

Day 1: Consultation + Treatment Planning

Clinical exam, photos, digital scan. We confirm which teeth need crowns, recommend monolithic vs layered for each, and answer all your questions.

    Day 2: Tooth Preparation

Under local anesthesia, the prosthodontist gently reduces 1-1.5 mm of tooth structure (more than veneers, less than full crown). Root canal treatment if needed. Temporary crowns placed.

    Day 3: Lab Fabrication

Master ceramist fabricates the zirconia framework (CAD/CAM), then hand-layers porcelain if doing layered zirconia. Takes 8-12 hours per arch.

    Day 4: Try-In + Final Bonding

Crowns tried in your mouth, color and bite checked, you give approval. Acid-etched, bonded with light-cured resin cement, polished.

Day 5: Final Adjustments + Departure

Bite refinement, professional polish, take-home aftercare kit. You fly home with permanent restorations.

When Do You Need Zirconia Crowns Instead of Veneers?

You need crowns (instead of veneers) when:

  • The tooth has a large filling that has weakened it
  • You have had a root canal on the tooth
  • A cusp has fractured
  • The tooth is significantly damaged or worn down
  • You need to restore both biting surfaces (back teeth)
  • You can use veneers when:

  • The tooth is healthy with minimal structural damage
  • You only want to fix the front aesthetic surface
  • Tooth alignment is acceptable
  • During your free WhatsApp consultation, we tell you exactly which approach is right for each tooth.

How long do zirconia crowns last?

15-20+ years for monolithic zirconia, 12-15 years for layered zirconia, with proper care. The zirconia material itself can outlast the patient; failure usually comes from gum recession, recurrent caries below the crown, or trauma to the tooth.

Are zirconia crowns better than porcelain (e.max)?

Each has its place. Zirconia is stronger and more durable — better for back teeth and patients who grind. E.max porcelain has more lifelike translucency — better for front teeth where aesthetics matter most. Many full-mouth restorations use both: zirconia in the back, e.max in the front.

Will the zirconia crown look natural?

Layered zirconia (with hand-applied porcelain) is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Monolithic zirconia is slightly more opaque but still excellent for back teeth where it is rarely visible. Our master ceramist hand-finishes every crown to match your natural tooth color and characterization.

Do zirconia crowns cause any allergic reactions?

No. Zirconia is 100% ceramic with no metal — completely biocompatible. Patients allergic to nickel or other base metals (a common problem with old PFM crowns) have no reaction to zirconia. This is one of the main reasons zirconia has replaced PFM as the gold standard.

Can zirconia crowns be placed on dental implants?

Yes. Zirconia is the most popular material for implant crowns due to its strength and aesthetics. The crown is screwed or cemented onto the abutment. WeCare uses zirconia for over 80% of implant restorations — it pairs perfectly with titanium implants.

How is the tooth prepared for a zirconia crown?

Under local anesthesia, the prosthodontist removes 1-1.5 mm of tooth structure on all sides to create space for the crown. This is more than a veneer (0.3-0.5 mm) but less than older PFM crown preparation. Temporary crowns are placed to protect the prepared tooth during the lab phase.

Will I need a root canal before getting a zirconia crown?

Sometimes. If the tooth has a large filling, deep decay, or visible cracks, a root canal may be necessary first to remove the inflamed nerve. We assess this from clinical exam + X-rays during your consultation. About 30% of crown patients need a root canal first; the procedure adds 1 day to your visit.

Are zirconia crowns covered by my insurance?

Cosmetic improvements (replacing healthy teeth for aesthetic reasons) are typically not covered. Restorative work (replacing damaged or missing teeth) is sometimes covered by private dental insurance — check with your insurer for "out-of-network treatment" reimbursement. We provide an itemized invoice in EUR for submission.
