How Does Professional Whitening Work?

Professional whitening uses high-concentration hydrogen peroxide (25-37%) gel applied to your teeth and activated by a specialized LED light. The peroxide breaks down stain molecules in the enamel and underlying dentin, brightening the overall tooth color without damaging the enamel structure. The LED light accelerates the chemical reaction so results are visible in one session instead of weeks of at-home strips.

The process is fundamentally different from over-the-counter whitening strips:

    What Stains Can Be Whitened?

    For deep intrinsic stains (tetracycline, fluorosis), whitening alone may not give the desired result — we recommend veneers as the gold standard.

    The Treatment Process

    Day 1: Consultation + Whitening Session (2 hours)

    1. Consultation (15 min) — Clinical exam, photos, shade matching with VITA shade guide. We assess what stains you have, your enamel thickness, gum health, and any existing dental work that won't whiten (crowns, fillings).

    2. Pre-treatment cleaning (20 min) — Professional polish to remove plaque and superficial stains. The peroxide works better on a clean surface.

    3. Gum isolation (10 min) — Liquid dam applied to gums, lips retracted with cheek retractor. Eye protection provided.

    4. 4 whitening sessions (60 min total) — 15 minutes each with Zoom!® gel + LED light. We measure shade after each session to track progress.

    5. Aftercare instructions (10 min) — Take-home kit with desensitizing gel + custom trays for maintenance.

    Day 2 (Optional): Top-Up Session

    If you want maximum brightness, a 30-minute top-up session the next morning adds another 1-2 shades.

    • Aftercare — Maintaining Your White Smile

    For the first 48 hours after whitening, your enamel is slightly more porous and stain-prone. Follow the "white diet":

  • Berries (blueberries, blackberries)
  • Curry, turmeric, beets
  • Smoking

  • Avoid heavy staining habits (coffee, smoking, red wine) or rinse after consuming
  • Annual professional cleaning removes accumulated surface stains

    How many shades whiter will my teeth get?↓

    Average result is 5-8 shades brighter on the VITA shade guide. Patients with heavy coffee/tobacco staining often see 8+ shades. Patients with already-white teeth see 2-4 shades. We measure precisely before and after using a shade guide so you know exactly the change.

    Is professional whitening safe for my enamel?↓

    Yes — when done by professionals with the right concentration and isolation. The peroxide gel breaks down stain molecules but does not damage enamel structure (the calcium-phosphate matrix is unaffected). At-home over-the-counter strips at the wrong pH or concentration can cause enamel demineralization; that is why professional supervision matters.

    Does whitening cause sensitivity?↓

    Some patients experience mild sensitivity for 24-48 hours after treatment — typically a sharp, fleeting tingle when drinking cold liquids. We minimize this with: (1) desensitizing gel applied before treatment, (2) potassium nitrate in the whitening gel itself, (3) take-home desensitizing toothpaste for 1 week. Severe pain is rare and usually responds to ibuprofen.

    1-3 years before a touch-up is needed, depending on your habits. Heavy coffee drinkers and smokers may need annual maintenance. Patients with low-staining diets can go 3-5 years between sessions. The take-home kit allows DIY touch-ups in 1-2 weeks.

    Will whitening work on my crowns or fillings?↓

    No. Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, and fillings keep their original color. If you have visible white fillings on front teeth, we may need to replace them after whitening to match the new (brighter) color of your natural teeth. We assess this during consultation.

    Can pregnant or breastfeeding women get whitening?↓

    No. We do not perform whitening during pregnancy or breastfeeding as a precaution. Although hydrogen peroxide is unlikely to cause harm at these concentrations, the data is limited. We recommend waiting until after weaning.

    Whitening vs veneers — which is right for me?↓

    Whitening is for natural teeth that are stained but otherwise structurally fine. Veneers are for teeth that have shape, alignment, or wear problems in addition to color. If your teeth are straight and aligned, just yellow — whitening. If your teeth are crooked, chipped, or worn — veneers. Consultation determines which.

    Can children get whitening?↓

    Generally not before age 16. Children enamel is more sensitive and not fully mineralized. We make exceptions for severe psychological distress over tooth color, but only after dermatologist consultation. Most children grow out of yellow-tinted baby teeth as adult teeth replace them.
