Geistlich Bio-Gide® — The Gold-Standard GBR Membrane

Bio-Gide® from Geistlich (Switzerland) is the most-researched resorbable collagen membrane in dental implantology — paired with Bio-Oss® for guided bone regeneration. Used at WeCare for all major bone augmentation cases.

When a bone graft is placed in the dental implant area, a barrier membrane is needed to prevent fast-growing soft tissue from invading the slow-growing bone graft area. Bio-Gide® from Geistlich Pharma (Wolhusen, Switzerland) is the gold-standard collagen membrane used worldwide for guided bone regeneration (GBR). WeCare Antalya uses authentic Bio-Gide® for all major bone augmentation cases — typically paired with Bio-Oss® bone graft material in our standard "Bio-Oss + Bio-Gide" GBR protocol.

Why a Membrane Is Needed

Bone heals slowly (months) while soft tissue heals quickly (weeks). When a bone graft is placed without a membrane:

  • Soft tissue invades the graft area before new bone forms
  • Resulting tissue is fibrous (scar-like), not bone
  • Implant placement becomes difficult or impossible
  • A barrier membrane separates the bone graft from the soft tissue, allowing bone cells to grow into the graft area uninterrupted. After 4-6 months, the membrane resorbs naturally and the soft tissue heals over the now-mature bone.

    What Makes Bio-Gide® Different

Bio-Gide® is a porcine-derived (pig collagen) bilayer membrane:

  • Smooth side — Faces the soft tissue. Prevents invasion.
  • Rough side — Faces the bone graft. Promotes bone cell adhesion and growth.
  • This bilayer design is unique to Bio-Gide® and produces measurably better outcomes than single-layer membranes. The membrane resorbs naturally over 4-6 months — no removal surgery required.

    Bio-Gide® vs Synthetic Membranes

Synthetic alternatives (PTFE, PLA, PLG) exist but with trade-offs:

  • PTFE membranes — Non-resorbable, require second surgery for removal
  • PLA / PLG synthetic resorbable — Faster resorption (2-3 months) which can be insufficient for large grafts
  • Generic collagen — Lower quality control, inconsistent resorption profile
  • Bio-Gide® has a 25-year clinical track record with documented success rates of 90-95% for sinus lifts, ridge augmentation, and socket preservation.

    When Bio-Gide® Is Used

    WeCare uses Bio-Gide® for:

  • Sinus lift (lateral approach) — Membrane placed over the sinus window after Bio-Oss® graft
  • Ridge augmentation — Membrane covers the graft area, prevents soft-tissue invasion
  • Socket preservation — Membrane retains Bio-Oss® particles in the extraction socket
  • Peri-implant defect repair — Around failing implants, supports new bone formation
  • Implant placement with bone graft — Simultaneous procedures use membrane for stability
  • Small grafts in clinically straightforward cases sometimes don't need membrane. Large grafts always do.

    Authentic Geistlich Materials

WeCare provides for every Bio-Gide® case:

  • Manufacturer batch certificate from Geistlich
  • Original sealed sterile packaging
  • Independent verification through Geistlich's distributor network if requested
  • Full documentation in your treatment record
  • We never substitute generic membranes for Bio-Gide® when the treatment plan specifies it.

    Travel and Logistics

Bone graft + membrane cases at WeCare:

  • Pre-treatment 3D CBCT scan
  • Authentic Bio-Oss® + Bio-Gide® materials
  • Surgery under local anaesthesia
  • 4-6 month healing period (you go home)
  • Implant placement on visit 2

    Sık Sorulan Sorular

Is Bio-Gide® safe — it comes from pigs?

Completely safe. Bio-Gide® is processed to remove all proteins, leaving only the collagen matrix. The processing eliminates any disease transmission risk. Geistlich has performed millions of procedures worldwide with no documented adverse reactions. Approved by FDA and CE-marked.

How long does Bio-Gide® take to resorb?

4-6 months for most cases. Bio-Gide® resorbs slowly enough to support full bone formation underneath. By the time it resorbs, your own bone has matured and the soft tissue heals over normally. No membrane removal surgery required.

    Is Bio-Gide® always needed?

For large grafts (sinus lifts, major ridge augmentation), yes. For very small grafts (single-tooth socket preservation in healthy bone), sometimes the bone heals adequately without membrane. We assess case-by-case during planning.

What if I have a religious objection to porcine-derived material?

We respect that and offer alternatives. Allograft membranes (human donor collagen) and synthetic membranes (PLA/PLG) are available. Tell us during planning and we adjust the protocol.

Can Bio-Gide® be used with allograft or synthetic bone?

Yes. Bio-Gide® works with any graft material — Bio-Oss® (xenograft), allograft, autograft (your own bone), or synthetic substitutes. The combination depends on case-specific factors. WeCare uses Bio-Oss® + Bio-Gide® as the default but can adjust for individual preferences.

Does Bio-Gide® affect the implant healing time?

No. The membrane only affects bone graft healing (4-6 months pre-implant). After implant placement, healing follows the standard protocol (3 months osseointegration). Total time is the bone graft healing + implant healing combined.
