Katana Zirconia from Kuraray Noritake Dental (Tokyo, Japan) is the leading multi-layer zirconia brand worldwide, distinguished from competitors by its built-in shade gradient technology. Each Katana block contains pre-formed colour zones — cervical chroma at one end transitioning gradually to incisal translucency at the other — that mimic the natural colour gradient of healthy teeth without requiring manual hand-layering. WeCare Antalya uses Katana Zirconia for cases where aesthetic-grade zirconia is needed.

What Multi-Layer Means

Standard monolithic zirconia is a single uniform colour throughout the block. To achieve a natural tooth gradient, the laboratory technician must hand-paint colour onto the milled crown — a process that adds time and depends on artistic skill.

Katana multi-layer zirconia bypasses this by manufacturing the colour gradient into the block itself:

Cervical zone (gum end) — Higher chroma (more yellow/orange), mimics natural cervical colour where dentin shows through thin enamel

Body zone (middle) — Standard tooth colour

Incisal zone (edge) — High translucency, mimics natural enamel translucency at the biting edge

When the crown is milled from a properly oriented Katana block, the cervical-to-incisal gradient is built in automatically. No hand-painting required.

Katana Variants at WeCare

Katana Zirconia STML (Super Translucent Multi-Layered) — Highest translucency. Used for visible front-tooth crowns where aesthetics matter most.

Katana Zirconia UTML (Ultra Translucent Multi-Layered) — Even higher translucency than STML. Premium option for anterior single-tooth cases.

Katana Zirconia ML (Multi-Layered) — Standard translucency with full colour gradient. Good balance for premolars and visible posterior teeth.

Katana HT (High Translucency, single-shade) — Single-shade translucent zirconia. Used for posterior crowns where colour gradient matters less.

Katana vs Prettau — When Which

Both Katana and Prettau are premium multi-layer / monolithic zirconia. Differences:

For anterior single crowns and small bridges, Katana UTML/STML is excellent. For All-on-4® full-arch bridges and posterior crowns, Prettau is typically our recommendation.

Patients who need a quick turnaround (no hand-painting time)

Premolar crown cases where aesthetics matter and bite force is moderate

Veneer-alternative cases where porcelain veneer is contraindicated

Is Katana zirconia stronger than my natural teeth?↓

Yes. Even the most translucent Katana variants (UTML at 750 MPa) are more than 10× stronger than natural enamel. The translucent variants trade some strength for aesthetics — for back teeth where strength matters more, we use higher-strength variants or Prettau.

Will my Katana crown look natural?↓

Yes — that is the entire point of the multi-layer design. The built-in shade gradient mimics natural tooth colour from gum to edge. UTML and STML variants are particularly natural-looking, often indistinguishable from natural teeth in normal lighting.

Can I have Katana for veneers?↓

Sometimes. Katana UTML is occasionally used for veneers when the patient is a heavy bruxer who would chip IPS e.max. For most veneer cases, IPS e.max remains our first choice because of superior translucency at the very thin (0.3-0.5 mm) thicknesses veneers require.

How long does a Katana crown last?↓

15+ years with proper care. Same as other premium zirconia. WeCare provides 5-year warranty with free replacement if a Katana crown fails within that period.

What is the difference between Katana and IPS e.max®?↓

Material chemistry. Katana is yttria-stabilised zirconia (zirconium dioxide ceramic). IPS e.max® is lithium disilicate (different ceramic chemistry). Katana is stronger; e.max is more translucent. For different applications.

Can I match a Katana crown to my existing IPS e.max® veneers?↓

Yes, when designed together. Katana UTML can be shade-matched to e.max veneers for harmonious appearance. Best results when both are designed and made simultaneously by the same master ceramist.
