Prettau Zirconia is a premium monolithic dental ceramic developed by Zirkonzahn (Bruneck, Italy) — the most respected zirconia brand in dental laboratory work worldwide. WeCare Dental Clinic in Antalya uses Prettau for cases that require maximum strength combined with acceptable aesthetics — particularly All-on-4® bridges, posterior crowns, and bruxism patients.

What Makes Prettau Different

Standard monolithic zirconia has 1100-1200 MPa flexural strength but is famously opaque — it works for back teeth but looks unnatural at the smile zone. Prettau improves on this through:

Translucent zirconia variants (Prettau Anterior, Prettau Aquaria) that approach IPS e.max® translucency while keeping zirconia strength

Multi-layer color gradients — Cervical chroma at the gum line transitioning to incisal translucency at the edge, mimicking natural tooth gradient

Premium surface finishing — Hand-polished by laboratory artisans for optimal sheen and surface quality

When Prettau Is the Right Choice

We use Prettau Zirconia for:

1. All-on-4® / All-on-6® permanent bridges — The 12-14 tooth bridge supported by 4-6 implants needs maximum strength to withstand bite forces. Prettau is our default permanent bridge material.

2. Posterior crowns — Molars handle 80-200 N bite forces. Prettau or other monolithic zirconia outperforms IPS e.max® for these cases.

3. Bruxism patients — Heavy grinding can chip IPS e.max® veneers. Prettau monolithic zirconia is the durable alternative.

4. Implant-supported crowns — The connection between implant and crown is rigid, so flexible materials like e.max can crack at the connection. Zirconia is the standard for implant restorations.

Prettau Sub-Lines at WeCare

Prettau Original — Maximum strength (1200 MPa), good aesthetics. Default for All-on-4® bridges and posterior implant crowns.

Prettau Anterior — Translucent variant for visible front-tooth crowns. Strength reduced to 850 MPa but improved aesthetics.

Prettau Aquaria — Modern multi-layer version with built-in shade gradient. Used for premium full-mouth makeovers.

Prettau vs IPS e.max® — When Which

For Hollywood smile cases (visible front teeth), we use IPS e.max®. For posterior or full-arch cases, Prettau Zirconia. For combination cases, we use both — IPS e.max® for the smile zone + Prettau for back teeth, designed to harmonise in shade.

Is Prettau Zirconia stronger than my natural teeth?↓

Yes. Natural enamel has flexural strength around 30-90 MPa; Prettau Zirconia is 1200 MPa. The crown can take any bite force you can generate. The connection point (cement layer or implant interface) is the limiting factor, not the crown material itself.

Will my Prettau crown look as natural as my own teeth?↓

Close, with the right Prettau variant. Standard Prettau is acceptably natural for back teeth but slightly opaque for front teeth. Prettau Anterior or Aquaria with multi-layer shade gradient looks much more natural for visible teeth. For maximum natural appearance on visible front teeth, IPS e.max® is still the leader.

Can Prettau be used for veneers?↓

Yes, but rarely the right choice. Veneers are very thin (0.3-0.5 mm) and the strength advantage of zirconia is wasted at this thickness. IPS e.max® is preferred for veneers because of better translucency. Prettau veneers are sometimes used for bruxers who need maximum chipping resistance.

How long does a Prettau crown last?↓

15+ years with proper care. Zirconia material itself does not degrade — failure usually comes from cement margin breakdown or trauma. WeCare provides 5-year warranty with free replacement if a Prettau crown fails within that period.

Can Prettau crowns be repaired if they chip?↓

Small chips can be polished smooth without removal. Larger fractures usually require crown replacement. Because Prettau is so strong, chipping is rare — even in bruxers wearing a night guard.

Do I need a night guard with Prettau crowns?↓

Recommended for bruxers, optional for non-bruxers. Prettau itself is very chip-resistant, but the natural teeth opposing your Prettau crown can wear down faster from the harder zirconia. Night guard protects both. We make a custom one for every patient with bruxism history.
